Why I Switched to Leki Trigger 3D Ski Poles

Have you ever injured your thumb or hand in a skiing fall? For a long time, I didn't even realize that was possible, let alone think about it. I now know this can happen if you use ski poles with straps. One day, it happened to me. During a fall the only injury I received was to my thumb/hand. I had been skiing with traditional poles with straps.

Fortunately, the injury wasn't serious and with a little time healed without any lasting problems. However, during the same fall, I also bent one of my ski poles, so I found myself in the market for a new set of ski poles.

I started researching my options and eventually visited my "go-to shop", The Ski Shop in Colorado Springs, to get some expert advice from people I trust. They recommended the LEKI poles and the Leki Trigger 3D system.

LEKI describes the history of the Trigger system this way:

In 1999, LEKI introduced the first generation of the Trigger system. This innovative system allowed users to connect directly into the grip using a clip affixed to a mesh strap worn over a glove or mitten. Over the years, the Trigger system has undergone many improvements, leading to the development of the revolutionary Trigger 3D. With Trigger 3D, users can clip directly into the grip using the Trigger loop, which is attached to breathable mesh straps that securely fit around any glove or mitten. The Trigger loop is also sewn into LEKI mittens and gloves. This loop easily clicks into the Trigger 3D grip, providing a seamless and strapless interface that ensures optimal power transfer and precise pole plants. The patented Trigger 3D offers an unrivaled 220° of release, delivering exceptional security and performance.

How It Works

  • The Connection: A small integrated loop on a compatible glove or a separate mesh strap clicks directly into the top of the pole grip.

  • The Release: You disconnect by pressing a button on top of the grip with your thumb, or automatically during a fall.

So I purchased my first set of LEKI Trigger poles on the advice of those at The Ski Shop. I initially used the accessory that can be used with any gloves that works with the trigger system. Later, I added a pair of LEKI gloves with the built-in Trigger loops. Since then, I have become a big fan of the system.

I have about 100+ days use on the gloves and the Trigger system worked exactly as advertised. The poles stay securely attached while skiing but release during more severe falls, helping to reduce the risk of thumb and hand injuries. Clipping in and out is quick and intuitive, and after a few runs it becomes second nature. A quick push of the button on the top of the pole and you release from the poles easily. While some may have reported unwanted release of the pole under certain conditions, this has not yet happened to me. But I have had a couple of falls where they did release during the fall, however, most of my falls they did not release (nor did they need to).

The Leki gloves have also impressed me. They are warm, dry, comfortable, and durable. I have used them on the coldest days (down to single digits temps). After two full ski seasons, the integrated Trigger loops show very little wear and continue to function perfectly.

What I appreciate most about the trigger system is the added peace of mind. While no piece of equipment can eliminate injury risk entirely, the Trigger system is designed to reduce stress on your hands and thumbs during a fall. Combined with the convenience of the clip-in design, it has become one of my favorite pieces of ski equipment.

If you're shopping for new poles and want a system that offers both convenience and an extra measure of safety, the LEKI Trigger system is well worth considering.
