For decades, waxing skis has followed the same routine: heat an iron, drip wax, spread it across the base, let it cool, scrape away the excess, then brush until the base shines. It works—but it's messy, time-consuming, and can be intimidating for beginners.


The MountainFLOW IR Waxer changes that.


Using infrared heat instead of a traditional waxing iron, it promises a cleaner, faster process that uses dramatically less wax and eliminates scraping altogether. But does it actually deliver?


After reviewing this product's design, manufacturer claims, and other's feedback, I decided to give it a try. Here is how the mountainFLOW IR Waxer stacks up.


My Quick Verdict

Pros

What Is the MountainFLOW IR Waxer?

Instead of heating wax with a flat iron, the IR Waxer uses two infrared heating elements to warm both the ski base and the wax. The wax is rubbed directly onto the base, then the infrared heat melts it into the base material.







According to mMountainFLOW, the process:


  • Eliminates scraping

The company recommends holding the unit about 4–6 inches from the ski and slowly moving it from tip to tail while brushing the base after the wax cools.

With the IR Waxer, the process is much simpler:

  1. Clean the ski base.

  2. Rub on a thin layer of wax.

  3. Pass the IR Waxer slowly over the ski.

  4. Allow the wax to cool.

  5. Brush the base.


There's no dripping wax, no scraping piles of hardened wax from your bench, and far less cleanup overall. I quickly found the right speed to move the waxer over the base of the ski to melt the wax but not overheat the base.


For apartment/condo dwellers (like me) or anyone without a dedicated tuning bench, this convenience is a major advantage.

Performance on Snow

The biggest question is whether infrared waxing performs as well as a traditional hot wax.


Most users report and I agree:

  • Even wax absorption

  • Noticeably faster application

My Verdict

The mountainFLOW IR Waxer is one of the most innovative ski tuning products I have come across in a long time. It simplifies a traditionally messy job into a quick, clean process that encourages more frequent ski maintenance.


While traditional hot waxing remains the normal process for many, the IR Waxer offers an appealing alternative for skiers who value convenience. It uses less wax, creates almost no mess, and removes one of the least enjoyable parts of waxing—the scraping.


If you maintain several pairs of skis each season (as I do) or simply want a faster way to keep your bases in top condition, the mountainFLOW IR Waxer is a compelling investment. For occasional skiers, a conventional waxing iron may still provide the best value.
